Travelling is about stories … However, if you visit the same places as everyone else does you will most likely have a similar story.
“That proves you are unusual,” returned the Scarecrow; “and I am convinced that the only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folks are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed.” ― L. Frank Baum, The Land of Oz
Often when you tell your friends you have been to a particular place they will respond by saying, “yes we also went there”, and then rudely start telling you their story. This article will try to help you find things that are different so that your travel stories are different from your friends.
Recently in Part 6 of my Travel Itinerary series, I included Things to Do and suggested how you would find the things to do at the destination you visit. I also made mention of www.atlasobscura.com where you can find Cool, Hidden, and Unusual Things to Do. This will start your thinking and give you possibilities.
You will never find everything on one site so you will need to create your own searches and do some of your own research, and if you have more time you may also need to do some exploring of your own. I decided to focus on Paris, here are a few examples of what I turned up in my random searches…
SEARCH: extravagant things to do in Paris – the first things that come up are the normal things to do, which are not extravagant. Google, unfortunately, does not know the difference between words extravagant and luxury. Luxury is over the top and designed for the wanna-bees. The results normally give those horrible advertising sites with one piece of information and a gazillion adverts, links to celebrity gossip and money making scams.
You need to search with a few more specifics in mind, what do you actually want to do? You will need to narrow things down. I still am not sure, so let’s try something different.
SEARCH: once in a lifetime things to do in Paris – and it gives me amongst other things The Paris Bucket List: 45 Things to Do Before You Die which should keep me busy for a few days. Bigger cities have these strange lists shared by other travellers and bloggers. At least you will have a different story to tell your friends if you go to Paris.
SEARCH: unusual things to do in Paris – of course, the city has more than just the Eiffel tower, and one of the results are 10 Unusual Things to do in Paris that don’t include the Eiffel Tower. Paris is the city of love and it is supposed to be romantic. What could we find that is unusual and romantic?
You could visit The Wall of Love, which is a love-themed wall of 40 square metres in the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre.
Instead of just visiting the tourist centre of Paris around the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysées, why not look for the villages and neighbourhoods within the city of Paris. Visiting these areas will give you a truly Parisian experience and probably more enjoyable than queuing to see what every one has seen before. I found 18 Unusual and Off-the-Beaten Track Things to Do in Paris.
You will find there are a lot of weirder things in Paris than the Gargoyles.
Remind yourself to look further than just the normal attractions and the advertised day trips from the city. Searching for Random, Unusual & Weird is part of the fun – you may not always have time to visit all the places you find, but you will certainly learn about possibilities and often challenge yourself to find different places to visit wherever you decide to travel.
